I hear this issue debated a lot online, and at the poker table. More casual (gambling type) players will usually say that it's all the luck of the cards. More serious players claim that poker is a skill game where the best players will win the money.

But who is right? Do you believe poker is a game of skill or luck? Post your opinions and examples if you have some.

(You can find my thoughts in my latest article on poker luck vs skill)

I would say that poker is a game of skill with luck thrown in on the side.

For instance, determining the range of hands that your opponent could have is skill. Noticing the habits of the players at the table (loose, tight, aggressive, passive, etc) is a skill. Knowing what to do with that information is a skill.

What happens after that is luck.

Technically I agree with penguin but there's another way I like to look at...

Poker is 100% skill because over the long run players with an edge always win and players with a disadvantage always loose. It's like saying casinos are mostly skill but there's some luck involved just because the players win sometimes. That's not luck, just variance. Short term there could be "luck" but that's just a short term phenomenon.

Okay. I'm down with that.

I'd prefer to say that poker in the long run is skill. In the short run, it's luck.
